I killed my herb garden!

It’s been a few weeks since I planted my herb garden, so I figured it’s time for a progress post. The ultimate results of my attempts to grow this herb garden are… failure. I completely and utterly failed to grow a single herb out of five attempted pots. About a week after planting, my thyme had one teeny tiny sprout and my cilantro began to shoot up really nicely. The soil had dried out pretty badly, so I watered them but wound up drowning my thyme. The cilantro continued to thrive until I was out of the office four days […]

Thanksgiving Reflections – 2017

First and foremost, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I hope this year has brought you lots to be thankful for. I spent this Thanksgiving flying solo – well, lying low in my apartment with my cat and my friend’s dog. My family initially planned to come visit me this year, but their travel arrangements fell through so I didn’t have to learn to cook a turkey after all. Instead I got to spend my four-day weekend in my apartment (for which I am thankful) cuddling my cat (for whom I am thankful) and dogsitting my for my […]

Weekend Adventures: Indiana

Last weekend I skipped on up to Indiana for the first time – the 12th new state I’ve visited this year. The trip was to visit some friends and other than tickets to a Purdue basketball game Saturday night we had nothing planned. Most of the trip went unphotographed but it was such a fun, nerdy weekend I couldn’t not blog about it. Saturday We landed in Indy around 10am and met up with a friend who is currently pursuing a PhD at Purdue. If you’re unfamiliar with Purdue or Indiana geography, Purdue is in West Lafayette, a bit over […]

Adventure Weekend: Mountain Biking and Hiking Stony Man Mountain

I’ve talked before about how my goal of eventually building and living in a tiny house is less about the tiny house itself and more about the lifestyle I’m trying to cultivate: a lifestyle of having less and doing more. Putting aside the fall/winter dresses I couldn’t resist last week, I’ve been doing fairly well at resisting the urge to buy “stuff,” and this weekend I had an adventure-filled few days to fuel that passion for the outdoors within me. Friday kicked off with an early departure from the office (well, 5pm) to head into DC to attend my first […]

I planted my herb garden!

A few weeks ago I purchased this herb garden kit (not a sponsored link, just the one I bought), and it sat in the box for weeks and weeks while I procrastinated actually planting it. I’ve written before about wanting to try gardening, specifically indoor container gardening, and an herb garden kit seemed like a good place to start for someone whose only “gardening” experience is killing several succulents. I wanted to share my excitement at finally starting to grow something (next steps: growing vegetables and starting a compost bin for my plants) and also review the herb garden kit […]

Climbing out of the Stress Spiral

Whew! After nearly two weeks away I finally got around to posting my lessons learned through a year of budgeting Monday, and I’ve got another post in the works for later this week. I’ve been struggling to balance work projects with personal projects with maintaining friendships and relationships, and it all came to a head at the beginning of last week. I was in one of those periods where I felt overwhelmed and paralyzed by the stress of everything on my plate, and I had to take a step back. This isn’t super uncommon for me. I find myself feeling […]

Seven Things I’ve Learned In a Year of Budgeting

October marked one year of budgeting with You Need A Budget (YNAB) for me, and it’s been a heck of a ride. Some good months, some not so good, but all of them filled with lessons. And overall, it’s been a great year. Side note before I get going: This post is focused on the budgeting lessons I’ve learned over the last year, and not so much on the tool. I have budgeted off and on for much more than a year, and tried a handful of different tools before YNAB, but it wasn’t until switching to YNAB a year […]

Wednesday Round-up: Indoor Container Gardening

This week I’ve been alllll about learning how to start gardening despite not having any outdoor space. I live in an apartment where I have no yard, so actually planting things in the ground is out. I have a little porch but with it cooling off for winter, outdoor container gardening is out. So, I took to the internet looking for resources on the best plants to grow indoors (with limited natural light) and how to get started. So, for this Wednesday Round-up, I present to you: Six articles to read before starting your indoor container garden Greatist The 16 […]

DIY Halloween Treats + Pumpkin Carving

Despite lamenting the rent on my small one-bedroom apartment, I do love and take pride in my little space and I love any opportunity to have friends over. With Halloween right around the corner, I was dying to make (and eat) some cute, festive treats, so I had a pumpkin carving get-together complete with Halloween-themed sweets. My kitchen is too small for more than one or two people to move around in at once, so I made all the treats ahead of time and just invited people to eat them and carve pumpkins. In a larger space, all of these […]

Wednesday Round-up: Tiny House Inspiration

I follow a handful of Tiny House blogs and am always looking for inspiration on the tiny house design/build process, homesteading, and minimizing my life. I thought I’d start a new post series where I share some of the posts, articles, and videos about tiny house living that have been inspiring me over the last week. This week’s finds: The Tiny Life How To Quit Impulse Shopping Impulse shopping is something I struggle with, and although I religiously budget every dollar (I loooove You Need A Budget), I frequently find myself trying to make room in the budget for purchases […]
